How We Built the EV Charging Infrastructure Platform for Swiss Startup

How We Built the EV Charging Infrastructure Platform for Swiss Startup

About the Client

Sintio is a Swiss e-mobility company based in Altendorf, providing comprehensive EV charging station management and billing solutions for residential, commercial, and public properties across Switzerland. They offer four subscription tiers—sintio.light, sintio.service, sintio.fullservice, and sintio.pooling—covering everything from self-managed DIY operations to fully supported charging networks with proactive monitoring. Their platform is OCPP-compatible, supporting 30+ charger manufacturers including Zaptec, Hager, Mennekes, ABB, and Easee. When we began our partnership, Sintio was in the early stages of building their technology and needed a team capable of delivering an entire software ecosystem from the ground up.

How we approached challenges uniquely

Approach to building EV charging infrastructure platform

Universal OCPP Gateway

Implemented a universal OCPP gateway supporting 20+ charger brands with manufacturer-specific adapters for consistent behavior.

Multi-Tenant Architecture

Built flexible system supporting multiple subscription tiers with different feature sets and billing models.

Frictionless Public Charging

Designed QR-code flow supporting multiple payment methods with sub-second response times during peak hours.

Cross-Platform Consistency

Maintained design system parity across CPO portal, web app, iOS, Android, and marketing website.

Our process that built a scalable solution

  • Discovery - We mapped business requirements for five interconnected products, defined user personas for property owners, CPOs, and drivers, and identified technical constraints including OCPP compatibility.
  • Design - We created comprehensive wireframes and high-fidelity mockups in Figma for the CPO portal, public charging web app, iOS and Android mobile apps, and marketing website.
  • Development - We delivered a functional MVP in just 8 weeks with iterative bi-weekly sprints, enabling Sintio to begin onboarding their first customers while development continued in parallel.
  • Integration - We integrated Stripe for payment processing supporting TWINT, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, plus Google Maps for location services enabling drivers to find stations.

Solution for EV charging infrastructure platform

What We Did

We built Sintio's entire technology ecosystem from the ground up—five interconnected products delivered through a single unified engineering engagement. Starting with deep discovery and Figma-based UX design, we delivered a functional MVP in just 8 weeks, enabling Sintio to begin onboarding their first customers.

The Sintio Portal gives property owners and CPOs a central hub for monitoring all charging stations, managing multi-tier subscriptions, generating invoices, and accessing real-time analytics. The public charging portal lets drivers initiate and pay for a session instantly via QR code—no app download or account required—supporting TWINT, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

Result & Impact

Solution for EV charging infrastructure platform

The platform we built has turned Sintio into a credible, competitive force in the Swiss EV charging market. From concept to live product in months, the platform now manages over 5,000 charging stations across Switzerland, processes more than 1 million charging sessions per month, and serves 10,000+ active monthly users.

The OCPP gateway supports 30+ charger manufacturers out of the box—meaning Sintio can onboard virtually any hardware without bespoke integration work. The frictionless QR-code payment flow removed the biggest barrier to public charging adoption.

Sintio used the platform's early traction to secure funding and accelerate growth, expanding their service offering across residential, commercial, and public charging categories. What started as an 8-week MVP engagement has grown into an ongoing partnership.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you handle integration with different charger manufacturers?

We built a universal OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) gateway that supports protocol version 1.6 with manufacturer-specific adapters. This abstraction layer handles quirks from brands like Zaptec, Easee, ABB, Hager, Keba, and 15+ others, ensuring consistent monitoring, control, and billing regardless of the hardware installed.

Can you build both web and mobile applications for EV charging?

Yes, we deliver complete cross-platform solutions. For this project, we built the CPO management portal and public charging web app using Next.js, plus native iOS and Android apps using React Native. All platforms share the same design system and connect to unified backend services.

How does the subscription-based billing work?

We implemented a flexible billing engine using Stripe that supports multiple subscription tiers. Each tier has different features, pricing models (per-charger monthly fees), and billing workflows. The system handles automatic invoicing, proration for mid-cycle changes, and detailed usage reporting for reconciliation.

How does public charging work without requiring user login?

We designed a frictionless QR-code flow where drivers scan a code at the charging station, select their payment method (TWINT, credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay), and start charging immediately. No app download or account creation required. The system handles session tracking, real-time metering, and automatic payment processing.

What is the typical timeline for building an EV charging platform?

We delivered a functional MVP in 8 weeks, including the CPO portal with core charging management features. The full platform with mobile apps, public charging, and advanced analytics was completed over several months through iterative development. Timeline varies based on scope, but our modular approach allows you to launch quickly and expand features progressively.
