About the Client

Strompreise Schweiz is a Swiss electricity tariff transparency platform serving consumers, smart device manufacturers, and distribution system operators (DSOs) across Switzerland. The Swiss energy market is uniquely complex: hundreds of regional DSOs each set their own pricing, with structures that include separate line items for energy tariff, capacity pricing, grid usage, and meter fees. Prior to this platform, the only public reference was ElCom's government portal—which publishes only averaged values for standardized consumer profiles, data too blunt for modern smart energy systems. The founder identified this gap and brought us in to build a platform that replaces that opacity with granular, itemized, machine-readable pricing data in full compliance with Electricity Supply Ordinance (StromVV) Article 7b.

How we approached challenges uniquely

Approach to building smart energy platform

Complex Tariff Structures

Designed flexible data models that handle demand-based tariffs, peak/off-peak rates, capacity pricing, and meter fees across 600+ energy providers.

API for Smart Devices

Built RESTful APIs that deliver tariff data in machine-readable formats, enabling EVs, heat pumps, and solar inverters to optimize energy consumption automatically.

Regulatory Compliance

Implemented data delivery formats compliant with Electricity Supply Ordinance (StromVV) Article 7b requirements.

Speed to Market

Delivered a fully functional MVP in just 1 month, enabling rapid user feedback and iteration.

Our process that built a scalable solution

  • Discovery - We conducted deep research into Swiss energy regulations, complex tariff structures across hundreds of providers, and StromVV Article 7b compliance requirements.
  • Design - We mapped flexible data models capable of representing diverse tariff structures for 600+ Swiss energy providers, ensuring accurate representation of pricing and fees.
  • Development - We built a Next.js frontend for tariff browsing and cloud-based Node.js backend services on AWS with DynamoDB, delivering machine-readable RESTful APIs.
  • Integration - We ensured low-latency API responses optimized for smart energy controllers including EVs, heat pumps, and solar inverters that require real-time tariff data.

Solution for smart energy platform

What We Did

We built Strompreise Schweiz from the ground up in just 1 month—a comprehensive Swiss electricity tariff transparency platform that goes far beyond what existing government portals provide. The platform features a tariff browsing interface covering 600+ Swiss energy providers, displaying exact breakdowns of energy tariff, capacity price, grid usage, and meter fees.

We built machine-readable RESTful APIs compliant with StromVV Article 7b, designed for smart energy controllers—EVs, heat pumps, solar inverters—that need accurate real-time tariff data to optimize consumption. On the backend we built cloud-based Node.js services on AWS with DynamoDB, and designed flexible data models for diverse tariff structures.

Result & Impact

Solution for smart energy platform

Strompreise Schweiz launched on time and has become Switzerland's most detailed public electricity tariff resource. Where ElCom's government portal shows only averaged values, this platform provides granular, itemized data that smart energy systems need to optimize consumption.

EVs, heat pumps, and solar inverters can now query the API to determine when electricity is cheapest and schedule energy-intensive activity accordingly—a capability that didn't exist in the Swiss market before. By making it viable to shift load to low-tariff periods, the platform supports Switzerland's Energy Strategy 2050 goals, reducing peak grid demand and CO₂ emissions.

The 1-month delivery proved that a production-ready, regulation-compliant energy data platform can be built quickly with the right team. The platform continues to grow as more DSOs contribute tariff data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Strompreise Schweiz different from ElCom's portal?

While ElCom's strompreis.elcom.admin.ch provides average values for standardized consumer profiles, Strompreise Schweiz offers exact tariff breakdowns including energy tariff, capacity price, grid usage, and meter fees. This detailed data is essential for smart energy controllers and optimization systems.

How do smart devices use the API?

Smart energy controllers—EVs, charging stations, heat pumps, and solar inverters—can query our API to get real-time tariff information. This enables them to automatically optimize energy consumption, charging during low-rate periods and reducing usage during peak pricing.

How did you deliver so quickly?

Our deep expertise in energy sector projects and modern web technologies (Node.js, Next.js) allowed us to move fast. Clear requirements and agile collaboration enabled us to deliver a production-ready MVP in just 1 month.

Is the platform compliant with Swiss regulations?

Yes. The platform provides machine-readable tariff data as required by Electricity Supply Ordinance (StromVV) Article 7b, ensuring energy providers can meet their transparency obligations.

What's next for Strompreise Schweiz?

The platform continues to evolve based on user feedback. More energy providers are being onboarded to contribute their tariff data, expanding coverage and enabling more savings opportunities for Swiss energy consumers and businesses.
